Baby teeth was originally a three song online single I released solo shortly after returning from LA. I had to remove it shortly after, and the idea never really got it’s day. Since then I’ve written several more songs that fit the motif. While trying to develop new songs with The Singular I was trying very hard to make the Baby Teeth songs work as something The Singular could perform, but it just didn’t feel right. The band even got much more creative once we stopped pushing those songs so hard. Time went by and I accidentally erased the hard drive that contained the original recording sessions for Baby Teeth. So now what I’ve decided to do is record them again one at a time and release them as they are completed.
The first song I will be sharing with you was the first one I wrote that felt like it was a part of this thing. It was originally just called Baby Teeth (Part One) but I changed it to The Summer of 89 to make things less complicated. It does a good job of summarizing the overall feeling of these songs. They are nostalgic for childhood, and they see childhood through the desperate hazy filter of adulthood. Some of the specific lines were taken from events in my young life, but nothing 100% literal. The song centers around the feeling of peace and joy of spending a summer day at the beach with your family, which we used to do on occasion. I hope you listen, enjoy, and share.
